10/1/07 Reading- Text Ch 1, CR “Shipwrecked Sailor” Paper One- Compare and contrast two near Eastern civilizations. The Shipwrecked Sailor Synopsis - Egyptian man tells tale of shipwreck (undersailor telling story to captain). Traveling south (we don't know why). Is shipwrecked on an island, finds a serpent. Serpent has human characteristics (eyebrows). Goes home. [PAPER] Egyptians are more optimistic about life (Nile floods and deposits silt; fertile soil every year). Egyptian dynasties are more stable. Mesopotamian life is more disorderly; lack of continuity in ruling classes. This results in more pessimism for the Mesopotamians. Idea of shipwreck. Pervasiveness with tradition, shows what people are made of. Idea of being away from home. Precariousness of humans (you don't realize how fragile you are until you are at the bottom. What has your society taught you to think?). Idea of kingship. What can a king expect from his subjects? Interaction between king and
