Three major types of communication: 1. Gap Junctions 2. Nerves (nervous system) 3. Endocrine System Gap Junctions: Important in Communication Mechanistically, how does this structure work? How is it able to communicate? 1. Direct connection by a tunnel or hollow tube that spans one cells membrane to the other membrane. (Direct cell to cell communication/contact) ex. In the heart w/ simultaneous contraction. Fast communication. 2. Allows for fast contraction of cardiac muscle and smooth muscle 3. Short distance communication, not long. 4. Stimulus put out by gap junctions is short-gone about as fast as it gets there 5. Another example-gap junctions in the brain 6. Contact dependent signal Nerves: Mechanistically- they have synapses (space b/t two cells) and neurotransmitters (chemical molecule physically passed from one nerve cell to the second nerve cell which has receptors (protein) on surface to get signal. Have action potentials. 1.
