Gibbons 1 Kelli Gibbons Dr. Russo English 110 04 April 2008 A Desire for Acceptance The Kite Runner , a novel by Khaled Hosseini, is a moving work that deals with some of society’s most sensitive issues. It is a work with no boundaries that explores the drastic differences among two cultures. It follows a man’s reflections on his childhood and his life-long search for redemption. The book covers a vast display of themes such as war, race, forgiveness, and sacrifice, but the most universal theme throughout the novel is the desire for acceptance. The theme of acceptance is evident throughout the entire novel; it can be seen in the actions of the characters, the conflict, the setting, and even the symbolism. The desire for acceptance is most easily recognizable throughout the novel’s conflicts. The focus of the novel is on the main character, Amir, and his search for redemption from his half-brother, Hassan. The reason that Amir feels as if he must find redemption is Hassan’s rape, which is witnessed by Amir during a kite running race. Amir neglects to stop the raping of Hassan because it is Amir’s perfect chance to gain acceptance from his father, Baba, by stealing the blue kite and winning the race. “I had been the entitled half, the society-approved, legitimate half, the unwitting embodiment of Baba's guilt. I looked at Hassan, showing those two missing front teeth, sunlight slanting on his face. Baba's other half. The un- entitled, under-privileged half. The half who had inherited what had been pure and noble in Baba. The half that, maybe, in the most secret recesses of his heart, Baba had thought of as his true son (359)." Gibbons 2
