Louis XIV Louis XIII lived at Palais Royal (before this, the Louvre was palace) Louis XIV built Versailles (used to be a hunting ground) He invited nobles to his impressive chateau in return for land, army, property and power He got the most prestigious architects to build it: Lenotre & Levau Represented the “Sun king”: an absolute monarchy, where the nobles danced around the central power His room faced east to sunrise behind glass gallery; revolved around iconology of the sun *** It was the idea of translating a concept into something visible and tangible Golden gates, marble walls, ornamental decoration, tapestry, imposing façade Versailles was influenced by Greek architecture and Chinese gardens Louis XVI Understood it would be difficult to uphold standards of absolutism; enlightenment more realistic Married to Marie Antoinette Reign of Terror: destructive killings that lead to revolution, lead by Jacobins & Robespierre Napoleon Bonaparte
