Module 2 BACB Ethical Guidelines Part 1 Section 9.0 Behavior analysis and research Understanding ethical guidelines is important for course, BACB exams, and relying on research design and data collection for clients BCBA design and conduct research with standards of scientific competence and ethical research Always conform with laws and regulations 9.1) BA (behavior analyst) conduct research after approval by independent formal research review board Universities -> institutional review board ABA center -> independent board at ABA center who wil review and sign off on any research projects Some institutions may not have a review board -> you can create one or go through external review board - point B) BA conducting research with clinical or human services must comply with the requirements for both intervention and research involvement for clients welfare - want to do whats best for client’s welfare -> could delay treatment if you try to make a new research design Conducting a study with adverse effects, client’s welfare has to come before research BA conduct research competently and with due concern for their dignity and welfare of the participants Similar to part B Put participants above research design Researchers and research assistants are only allowed to perform only those task for which they are appropriately trained and prepared for BA are responsible for ethical conduct of researchers, assistants and other under their supervision and oversight Only perform and do what you know how to do and trained to do Provide training and support, don’t assign task people cannot do (competency) As BCBA only conduct studies I was trained to do and competent to do As BCBA you are responsible for the pratice of those under you -> need to have skill set of what you want them to do If an ethical issue is unclear BA seek to resolve the issue through consultation with independent formal review boards, peer review , other formal consultation things Helps make sure you adhere to ethical guidelines BA only conduct research independently after they’ve successfully conducted research under a supervisor and defined relationship Thesis dissertation or specific research project Need supervised for first studies conducted -> Ball State does not do a thesis soo
BA conduction research take necessary steps to maximize benefit and minimize risk to their clients, supervises, research students, and other Participant benefits from research Design research studies that you think will benefit the participants BA always minimize the effect of personal, financial, social, organizational, or political factors that might lead to misuse of research Not getting paid Not influencing political Research conducted cannot be misinterpreted or misused Learns of misuse or misrepresentation -> take steps to correct this, contact the spreader of the misinterpretation BA avoid conflicts of interest when conducting research
