Health, wellness & illness Health – WHO: state of complete physical, mental, social well- being and not merely the absence of disease or illness Reflects concern for the individual as a total person functioning physically, psychologically and socially
Wellness & well-being State of well-being Basic aspects include : self-responsibility; an ultimate goal; a dynamic, growing process; daily decision making in areas of nutrition, stress management, physical fitness, preventive health care, and emotional health; and, most importantly, the whole being of the individual

7 Components of wellness 1. Physical : carry out daily tasks, achieve fitness, adequate nutrition, avoid abusing drugs & alcohol, positive lifestyle habits 2. Social : interact with people & within environment, to develop respect & tolerance for others with different opinions & beliefs 3. Emotional : manage stress & express emotions & feelings, accept limitations
7 Components of wellness (cont.) 4. Intellectual : learn, career development, continued growth, new challenges 5. Spiritual : beliefs, values, ethics 6. Occupational : balance between education, employment, & home influence personal satisfaction & relationships with others 7. Environmental : improve standard of living – includes food, water & air
Well-being Is a subjective perception of vitality (liveliness) and feeling well Can be described objectively, experienced, and measured… and Can be plotted on a continuum (continuous structure) It is a component of health
