AEM 264-003/901 Homework #10 2/23/07 Due: Wednesday, 2/28/07 The six-step solution method, correct units and a reasonable number of significant digits (generally 3 or 4) are required for every problem solved in every homework assignment in this section of AEM 264. 1. A bullet with mass m A =60g is fired horizontally with an initial velocity of 600 m/s into a block of soft wood with mass m B =3 kg that is initially at rest. The bullet passes completely through the block of wood and emerges with a velocity of 400 m/s. The wood block is observed to slide 2.7m to the left after the bullet starts it into motion. Determine the coefficient of friction μ between the wood block and the surface over which it slides. B B 2.7m 600 m/s 400 m/s 2. A 1.5 lb ball A is moving at a speed of 18 ft/s in the direction shown in the figure when it is hit by a 2.5 lb ball B with a speed of 12 ft/s as shown. If the coefficient of restitution is 0.7 and there is no friction, determine the velocity (vectors) and speed (scalar) of each ball after impact.

Unformatted text preview: 3. A sphere rebounds as shown from a rigid inclined surface. The initial speed of the ball is 5 m/s and is oriented vertically. If the angle is 30 and the coefficient of restitution is 0.8, determine the maximum height h reached by the ball after impact with the surface. h v A 4. At an intersection car B was traveling due south and car A was traveling 30 north of east when they crashed into each other. After the collision the two cars stuck together and skidded at an angle of 10 north of east. Each driver claimed they were going the speed limit of 30 mph and tried to slow down but could not avoid the crash because the other driver was going a lot faster. The weights of the two cars are W A =3600lb and W B =2800 lb. Determine which car was going faster and the speed of the faster car if the slower car was traveling at the speed limit. 40 50 v A =18 ft/sec v B =12 ft/sec +x +y o r 90 @ B v o r r 10 @ , B A v v o r 30 @ A v North East...
