PHYS 121 Homework 1 Due: 22 January 2007 Problem 1. State whether the following statements are true or false. Give a brief (1 or 2 sentence) explanation of your conclusion. (i) Scientific theories can never be proven true, they can only be shown to not be false. (ii) Horoscopes you read in the paper, based on astrological interpretations of the positions of the stars and planets, have the same scientific validity as predictions made by physics or astronomy theories. (iii) By doing experiments over the past 200 years Newton’s laws of motion have been proven to be the true description of the Universe. Thus they are the basis for all of physics and engineering and is why we get to learn about them this semester! Problem 2. You must provide short discussions of your answer to the following the questions. Just stating an answer is not sufficient. (i) Question 2.5. (ii) Question 2.6. (iii) Question 2.7. (iv)
