Engineering Design • There are some who would argue that the word engineering is synonymous with the phrase problem solving • most engineering problems are so complex that the engineer can’t immediately see the solution – it is very important that the engineer proceed methodically, solving the problem in stages • The Engineering Design Process: – begins with identification of a need – the engineer translates this need into definition of a problem that includes statement of desired outcome(s) – the engineer proceeds to synthesize a solution – the solution is analyzed to see if it produces the desired outcome – if not, the information gained is used in producing a new solution

Engineering Design (cont) • analysis and synthesis are intertwined: – Webster’s definition of analysis: a separating or breaking up of any whole into its parts, especially with an examination of these parts to find out their nature, proportion, function, interrelationship, etc. – Webster’s definition of synthesis: the putting together of parts or elements so as to form a whole • the design process is iterative, usually considering several alternative solutions in an attempt to find the best one • the cost of generating more solutions has to be balanced against the benefit to be derived in improving the “currently best” solution • a design methodology is a strategy or process for determining a solution to a design problem • a good design methodology should determine early in the process whether or not the problem can be solved
