Christina Lavelle Exegesis Report Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served; he came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people.” Exegesis of the Passage Each of my sources said the same thing. Jesus was not sent to have glory and fame, but to serve those on Earth. He is called the Son of Man so that it is known his purpose on Earth was to be a savior to the people, to die for their sins, and not a king on a throne to be worshipped and waited on. This passage was meant to humble the followers of Christ, who were asking for positions of honor and hoping for rewards in return for their loyalty to Christ. The New Jerome Biblical Commentary also goes so far as to say that the disciples did not understand the teachings of Jesus and did not follow his example.
