Jon Roth 4/12/06 Prof. Levy Essay 4 A Raisin in the Sun A Raisin in the Sun was a play turned movie in 1961 directed by Daniel Petrie. It details the life a poor black family that is looking to upgrade their living status. The head of the family (the grandmother) is about to receive a $10,000 insurance check from her deceased husband and the family is trying to move out of the Southside of Chicago. This movie received many award and nominations for its screen play and acting, including the Gary Cooper Award and it was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1962. Some of the actors in the film are Sidney Poitier as Walter Lee Younger, Claudia McNeil as Lena Younger, and Diana Sands as Benetha Younger. After the family realizes what is important they each go through their changes and figures out what is the best thing to do. The main character and protagonist of the story is Walter Lee Younger. He is a hard headed man who is trying to lead his family to a healthy life. He loves his son very much, and you can tell he wants the best for him by the beginning of the movie.
