Introduction: In this lab the benzoic acid from last lab was recrystallized. This was done by dissolving the benzoic acid solid with another solid. Both the solids dissolve in hot water but the only the benzoic acid is not soluble in cold water. The benzoic acid was then separated from all other compounds and allowed to crystallize. Reactions/Mechanisms/Theory: Recrystallization is a method for purifying non-volatile solids. Recrystallization is based on three concepts: 1) A compound is always more soluble in a hot solvent than it is in a cold solvent. 2) Different molecules have their own unique solubility properties. 3) Because of the lattice theory, a growing crystal will only accept similar entities into its lattice. To separate two compounds from each other, some other entity must be used to “trap” the unwanted compound and keep it out of solution. This is the method used for this lab and is shown in the drawing below. The beaker on the left shows the two compounds together in solution. The next one from the left shows the added entity “trapping” the unwanted compound. And finally the beaker on the right shows the solution after filtering, showing only the wanted
