Socrates Critical Analysis Paper One can search for the meaning of life and never come upon a real answer. He could continue to ask a new person everyday for the rest of their life and still never find a true definition. This is because everybody defines the purpose of life differently according to their own beliefs and passions. Some people’s purpose in life is focused on their life after death, while others may simply disregard the afterlife and focus on the here and now. Therefore, people may live their life in order to achieve the afterlife they desire, or they may live their life with the ultimate goal to achieve happiness. Socrates and Ivan Ilyich are two philosophers that confront this big question of, “How do I live a meaningful life?” They may both come from the upper class of their similarly superficial societies but they have very different answers to the question of how to live a meaningful life. Socrates preoccupies his life with the question of the importance of wisdom and virtue. He believes that one should always try to find virtue in everything that he or she does. Socrates also believes that the arguments he has with others is for the interlocutor’s benefit and that he is a doing a service to the gods. Socrates states, “Be sure that this is what the god orders me to do, and I think there is no greater blessing for the city than my service to the god.”(Apology 30a) Socrates is one who is more concerned about doing things in his life in order to become closer with the gods and have a good after life.
