Jenny JayMS#17202/13/13Test #1 Essay – Religious/Ethnic MinoritiesFrom 1400 to 1700, many societies indulged in conducting segregation between religious and ethnic minorities. Equality came with a price and people were stripped of their personhood and treated as objects or tools in the production of their society. Such decisions lead to inhumane treatment of these people causing riots and rebellions between social classes. Such ethnic and religious minorities consisted of the Aztecs, Huguenots, Jews, and the Jesuits. Each of these groups were affected by segregation and being exiled or terminated from their homelands.In the land of Aztlan under the power of Moctezuma II, Aztecs were attacked by Hernan Cortes in 1519 capturing and killing their emperor leaving Cortes in control of the newfound city Tenochtitlan. Aztecs were forced to live and work under the rule of Cortes who showing no mercy toward the Indians, slaughtered them and killed them by the thousands in the name of Christ. In conquering Tenochtitlan Cotes hoped to convert the natives to Christianity. Although his motives seemed fair and just, his ministry methods were inhumane and torturous to the Aztecs. Language barrier between the Spaniards and the Aztecs lead Cortes to believe the natives simply refused to accept their religious ways and ordered execution upon them. In the
