Containment and Change
In April of 1968, Martin Luther King Jr., traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, in support of a strike
by African-American garbage collectors. At 6 p.m. on the evening of April 4, King was shot as he
stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. Within an hour, he was pronounced dead at a local
hospital. As news of the assassination spread, rioting broke out in African-American
communities. In many ways, King’s life and death was, and remains, emblematic of the situation
of minorities in modern America.
