2 INTRODUCTION It is important to know the identity of microorganisms and determine an unknown bacterium in microbiology. The detection of unknown bacteria aids researcher in their understanding of the microbe’s biodiversity as well as their interaction with one another and the environment. The purpose of the study was to determine the type of bacteria worked with. Using all the methods that have been learned so far in microbiology class, multiple methods were used to identify the unknown bacterium. MATERIALS AND METHODS An unknown bacterium labeled as letter F was at our laboratory table. Using the methods learned so far, the unknown bacterium was identified. Procedures were followed as stated in the course laboratory manual by De Mers (1), unless otherwise noted. The first procedure we performed was the Gram stain. After determining the Gram reaction, specific biochemical tests were performed. The biochemical tests were chosen from the unknown identification tables that were in the lab manuals. Since unknown F was determined to be Gram a gram-positive rod, a Catalase test was performed, and the organism was observed on
