Titans2Movies and Sports Remember the TitansAs with many social issues, sports were at the front of the segregation issue. In this paperI have chosen the movie “Remember the Titans” and I will discuss the issue throughout the movie. Remember the Titans are not only capable of entertaining the masses, but it is also capable of providing detailed portrayals of social behavior in one’s everyday life. This paper will go on to analyze Remember the Titans through the principles of racism, the realistic conflict theory, and cultural theory. Racism is the extreme belief that races have distinct characteristics and hereditary factors, and, in addition, certain races are more superior to others. The realistic conflict theory proposes that conflicts between two different groups will erupt as the groups compete over the same limited resources. We will see what the life of African American coachesand players were like living through the time in American History.This was a volatile time in U.S. History; the 1970’s were a time of war, social upheaval, and racial fights for equality. Many of the issues of the day carried over from the 60’s. This was the time of the hippies, and the opposition to the Vietnam War, and self-proclaimed anarchy all over America. There was many different issues being fought on across the globe as well, and it seemed like the planet was fighting back against the mainstream, from the Munich Olympic bombings to the Watergate scandal.This movie is based on a school in Alexandria Virginia, which was just recently desegregated, and this movie is about the black coach and his players. The T. C Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia was going through a lot of changes at the time. The school district was just integrated by a court order and many of the students were going to school with kids of a different color for the first time ever. Everyone thought that the incumbent coach would be automatically named the head coach. Although there was a perfectly good white
Titans3coach, the school decided to hire Coach Boone who was black. The board of the school hires Coach Boone as the head coach and demotes Coach Yoast to his assistant. Along with the laws comes outrage from the white families of Alexandria; especially after the implementation of a law that combined the white school and the black school into one.Despite the advances made in U.S race relations during this time, tensions remained high in the 1970s as many of the reforms enacted during the earlier decades met with violent resistance. This was particularly true in America’s southern states where high levels of bigotry meant that black Americans continued to suffer humiliation, insult and discrimination. Racism is
