During the time Jane Elliott decided to implement a way in which students would learn the irrational basis on which segregation, prejudice, and discrimination were based, racial inequality had reached its peak. It was a time when blacks were no longer slaves, but were by all means not equal. Lamentably, the upbringing of the children in the classroom inculcated apathy towards people of color, thus teaching them a false sense of superiority upon beings that were “different.” The moment that Elliott segregated the classroom based on eye color, the students immediately acted with much prejudice to other kids whom they had been friends with; the friendship was put aside, and it was replaced with demeaning mannerisms.
