Author The author is the person who creates the message. The message will reflect the author’s experiences. Who they are and what they think can be influenced by their age, gender, race or ethnicity, nationality, class, education, religion, culture, and sexuality. When any of these things influence an author’s thinking, we call it bias. Be careful, though. These aspects do not necessarily determine what a person thinks. For example, not all rich people will have the same ideas. However, living with plenty of money will influence your thinking about how the world works. The publisher of a source requires the same analysis. Publications are never neutral. They are always publishing sources for an intended audience, and they have their own values, beliefs, purposes, and biases. And these may not be the same as the author’s.
