In which region would the magnitude of the electric field be the largest? A) Region 1 B) Region 2 C) Region 3 D) Region 4 E) Region 5 Solution: Since the electric field is the derivative of the potential, the answer is Region 2. . Problem 2 (two points) What is the equivalent capacitance for the following combination if each capacitor has C=1 mF. A. 5 mF B. 3 mF C. 2 mF D. 1 mF E. 0.5 mF Solution: Two leftmost and two rightmost capacitors are in parallel, these combinations both have capacitances equal to 2 mF. Now we have three capacitors in series, 2mF, 1mF, 2mF. Adding the reciprocals we obtain reciprocal equivalent capacitance: ½+1+½=2, therefore resulting capacitance is 0.5 mF.
