Exam 4 Review Chapter 4ID Diabetes- A chronic disease in which the body can no longer regulate glucose normally Type 1 caused by autoimmune disease body cannot produce enough insulin insulin-producing cells in pancreas destroyed Type 2 more common than Type 1 due to insulin sensitivity increasing in youth and children caused by obesity and sedimentary lifestyles body becomes less responsive to insulin Metabolic Syndrome- combination of medical disorders that when occurring together increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes Chapter 5ID Heart disease- occurs when blood vessels supplying the heart become blocked, and blood flow becomes restricted, reducing the amount of oxygen and nutrients that go to the heart Stroke- blockage of one of the blood vessels supplying the brain Risk Factors Age- the older you are, the more at risk you are gender- males more likely family history- more prone if a parent suffered from disease hypertension- high blood pressure LDL (low-density lipoproteins)- deliver cholesterol to blood. Too much can build up and create unsafe levels of cholesterol HDL (high-density liporproteins)- high in protein. Released by lover and pick up cholesterol from dying cells and turn it to another lipoprotein overweight- higher rates of death from cardiovascular disease. Higher blood pressure physical inactivity- increase in physical activity reduces your risk Blood lipid profile- exercise keep fat intake to 20-35% of daily energy intake decrease saturated fat intake to less than 7% increase omega 3 fatty acids Chapter 11: Healthy body weight Body Mass Index BMI=weight(kg)/height(m)^2 expresses the ratio of a persons weight to the square of his/her height good indicator of health risks; good screening tool easy to measure accurately; good for large numbers of people Limitation: BMI is distorted in people with high muscle mass(does not take body composition into account) Underwight: >18.5 Healthy: 18.5-24.9
