Treatment Approaches in Mental Health.
 Differentiate between the terms Mental Health and Mental Illness-
 Distinguish between the Levels of Prevention and Treatment and the role of the Registered
Nurse as it pertains to Mental Health and Mental Illness -
o Levels of Prevention and Treatment :
 Discuss the role of the Registered Nurse in the area on Mental Health as defined by the
ANA Standards-
o RN - counseling which includes interviewing and communication techniques, problem solving,
crisis intervention, stress management, and behavior modification.

 Psychotherapy.
 Can, but does not have to involve personality restructuring.
 Review the principles of Nurse/Client Relationship - Client centered, and goal directed;
Objective rather than subjective. This is a limited relationship, with a goal to help the Pt find more
satisfying behavior patterns, coping strategies and increasing self-worth.
