Bio 20A Supplementary Problems for Cell Biology 4/7/08 1 of 2 1. Think about a molecule of oxygen in the atmosphere inside the lecture hall during an exam. A student's brain cell needs that oxygen molecule in the process of making ATP, which will help them think of the correct answer to an exam problem. Specifically, the oxygen must bind to a protein embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane of a brain cell. The oxygen binding site on this protein is exposed to the mitochondrial matrix. Roughly estimate the # of times the molecule must cross a plasma membrane in order to bind this protein in the mitochondrion of a brain cell.
