A Christmas Carol Theme essay In the book A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the theme is to not live a life of greed. Ebenezer Scrooge is the main character who works at a counting house. He is surrounded by characters that shows the good during the Christmas time. Not only does Scrooge living a life of greed affect him, but it also affects the people around him. Scrooge has a nephew named Fred, who wants to see Scrooge during the holidays, but Scrooge was too self-centered to spend his time with family. Scrooge is warned by Jacob Marley, that he will be visited by three spirts, the ghost of Christmas past, the future Christmas and Christmas past. Jacob Marley was Ebenezer Scrooge’s old business partner who had sadly passed away several years ago. The theme of greed was shown in three different ways.
