Lecture 7 – Kurtis Blow Kurtis Blow, his real name was Kurtis Walker - Originally was a breakdancer - Then became a DJ by the name of Kool DJ Kurt 1979-1980 and Kurtis Blow is extremely hot at this time o Went to college and was a program director o When there were rappers looking for role models and inspiration, they would look to Kurtis Blow (and Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash) o Kurtis Blow was reputed to be the “6 th ” MC, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five would introduce Kurtis Blow as their 6 th MC First significant solo rap artist on record is Kurtis Blow o Can’t count King Tim the Third o He was significant because in the fall of 1979, Kurtis Blow became the first artist to sign with and release an album with a major label, Mercury Records o After Rapper’s Delight, the record that came in second was ‘The Breaks’ o The first rapper that signed an endorsement deal of any kind was also Kurtis Blow A lot of people were broke doing hip hop (especially in the beginning of hip hop) but Kurtis Blow was the only MC in his time that actually made a good living, exclusively from hip hop. o Kurtis Blow was so big that he opened up for Bob Marley and the Comadors (Cometors?) Back in the days, the problem with management was that there was none o No qualified management, only family, relatives, friends, etc.
