Conductivity Savannah Meyer Haley Gardner CHEM 131.0907 Dr. Naistat 10.02.18 Abstract
The purpose of this experiment is to determine which substances are conductive. In this experiment we use a electronic reader to determine which product is more conductive. First, we must weigh out each substance as close to .10g and to be as equal as possible. Then, we added each to a measured 20 mL of deionized water. Finally, we use the conductivity indicator to give us a pulse number. Introduction Conductivity is the degree in which a specific material conducts energy. The standard units of conductivity is either μ or m. A “μ” is in terms of macro.A “m” is in terms of many. Both μ and m are associated with an “s” in this lab. A “s” is also known as siemens. There are three parts to this experiment. The first part of the experiment is comparing conductivity. Conductivity is based on the number of ions in a substance. The substances we work with in this experiment are: Deionized water, Calcium Chloride, Dextrose, Isopropyl, Sodium Chloride, and Sucrose. When weighing these close to 0.10 grams the masses were not exact. Calcium Chloride had a mass of 0.114 grams. Dextrose had a mass of 0.101g.Isopropyl Alcohol had 5 drops. Sodium Chloride had a mass of 0.108 g.Sucrose had a mass of 0.101 grams. Each of these were massed trying to achieve close to 0.100 grams.
