Part III of the book seeks to critically assess whether and in what ways are theories of nationalism helpful for solving contemporary political challenges. For instance how can the principle of national self-determination be used to decide which nation ‘deserves’ its own state and which does not. The book takes a fresh look into international politics today and explains that the international order of the 21st century needs a ‘new’ type of nationalism for a new type of nation. The author presents a constructivist view of identity and points to the identity dynamics that are transcending the nation in a global world. She thus argues that the democratization and internationalization of inter-ethnic relations require for new understandings of nationalism. The new element in these approaches relates to their new view of the geopolitical scope of nationalism and in particular the fact that solutions to dilemmas of national self determination can be found through international agreements and/or regional settlements rather than within more ‘traditional’ understandings of the nation-state. Thus the author argues that the new type of nation state that will characterize the inter-national politics of the 21st century needs new modes of theorizing that no longer conform to the past questions of ethnic vs. civic nationalism or of modernist vs. primordialist approaches. This book offers a very useful introduction to nationalism studies and has the advantage of combining a political science approach informed by an international relations background with a more sociological take on nationalism that looks at concrete cases and seeks to illustrate concepts and theories with concrete examples. It is a highly commendable book for students and researchers that are now taking their first steps in the study of nationalism phenomena. It is also useful to nationalism studies
