5-5 The Central Limit Theorem Objectives : Students will be able to: Learn about and apply the Central Limit Theorem to solving problems involving the distribution of an original population and the distribution of sample means. The Central Limit Theorem forms the foundation for estimating population parameters and hypothesis testing. Recall that: A random variable is a variable that has a single numerical value, determined by chance, for each outcome of a procedure. A probability distribution is a graph, table, or formula that gives the probability for each value if a random variable. The sampling distribution of the mean is the probability distribution of sample means, with all samples having the same sample size, n . The Central Limit Theorem Given: 1. The random variable x has a distribution (which may or may not be normal) with mean μ and standard deviation σ . 2. Simple random samples all of the same size n are selected from the population.
