Name: Hassan HameedI.IntroductionBackground Information:The circulatory system of mammals is a complexcombination of blood vessels that reach throughout their bodies. This substantialsystem facilitates the organs, tissues and cells with nutrients and oxygen and removesCO2and waste products. Blood is the medium that carried out gases through thecirculatory system. The important function of mammalian circulatory system is theexchange of gases between the blood and tissues. In humans, birds and othermammals, blood absorbs O2and in the lungs releases CO2.So the respiratory andcirculatory systems work in coordination to inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide(Molnar and Gair, 2013).The mammalian heart is form of four chambers: two ventricles and two atria. On theright side of the heart there is one ventricle and one atria and so on the left side.Ventricle chambers pump the blood while atrial chambers receive it. Deoxygenatedblood is received by right atrium via the superior vena cava, which carries blood fromthe veins of arms and upper organs. Inferior vena cava gets blood from the veins of legsand lower organs and then drains into the right atrium. Deoxygenated blood of the heartitself drains into the right atrium via the coronary sinus.This deoxygenated blood thenfinally received by right ventricle through the tricuspid valve. For re-oxygenation, thisblood is pumped by right ventricle into the lungs through pulmonary arteries. Now theleft atrium receives oxygenated blood through the pulmonary veins from the lungs.Blood then transported to left ventricle via the bicuspid valve. Aorta supplied themuscles and organs of the body with oxygen-rich blood. This kind of blood pumping iscalled double circulation and is present in all mammals (MammalianHeart and Blood1 |P a g e

So it is expected to see four different chambers ofthe heart, bicuspid and tricuspid valves, chordae tendinae and papillary muscles afterdissection.There are various types of circulatory systems in different animals. Like some primitiveanimals use the method of diffusion for water, nutrients and gaseous exchange. Butadvanced animals have complex circulatory system that can be open or closed type.
