According to Merriam Webster Dictionary Advocate means "to support or argue for (a cause, policy, etc.) : to plead in favor of" (Merriam Webster, 2020). Advocacy is one of the biggest jobs a nurse must do daily. Advocacy is important because some patients are unable to advocate for themselves, so nurses must do it for them. Some patients are not educated about health care, nurses are the trained professionals, therefore, nurses must advocate for patients. The nurse’s role in advocating consists of "educating patients to help them make their own informed decisions, having a voice for them when they cannot speak for themselves, and ensuring no harm is done through safe nursing practices."(Bak, 2020). Advocating for patients is not something nurses should do just because their employer encourages it but because it is an "ethical responsibility for nurses"(Nsiah, Siakwa, & Ninnoni, 2019).
