Scientific Measurement Lab Zainab Nejati Nicole Pangborn 9/26/06 Nattapol “Ex” Pow-Anpongkul PART A: USE OF THE ANALYTIC BALANCES FOR MASS MEASUREMENTS 1. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to measure the weights of pennies pre-1982 and post-1982 in order to determine if one can distinguish between the two eras using mass. 2. Data: Masses of Pre-1982 Pennies Pre-1982 Pennies Mass (g) Observations 1 3.1142 Penny has grime on it. Tint is greenish. 2 3.0279 3 3.0813 4 3.0552 Total 12.2784 Masses of Post-1982 Pennies Post-1982 Pennies Mass (g) Observations 1 2.4913 Penny is really grimy possibly dirt 2 2.4996 3 2.5642 4 2.4830 Total 10.0382 3. Results: Mean, Standard Deviation and Calculated Mass of Each Era of Penny Penny Era Mean Mass (g) Standard Deviation (g) Mass of Four Pennies Calculated from Individual Masses (g) Pre-1982 3.0697 +/- 0.0368 12.2786 Post-1982 2.5095 +/– 0.0371 10.0381 4. Discussion: Based upon the data from this experiment it is possible to distinguish between a pre- 1982 penny and a post-1982 penny using mass. The mass of the pre-1982 pennies had a mean of 3.0697grams with a standard deviation of +/- 0.0368 while the mass of post- 1982 has a mass of over ½ gram less at 2.5095 grams and a standard deviation of +/- 0.0371. 5. Error Analysis:

Scientific Measurement Lab Zainab Nejati Nicole Pangborn 9/26/06 Nattapol “Ex” Pow-Anpongkul The calculated mass of the pennies does not agree with measured combined mass. The calculated mass of the pre-1982 pennies was 12.2786g while the measured mass was 12.2784g. Therefore there was a 0.0016% error in the calculated mass of the pre-1982 pennies as compared to the measured mass. The post-1982 pennies had a similar result. The calculated mass of the post-1982 pennies was 10.0831g while the measured mass
