On the night of July 16, 1918, Bolshevik soldiers escorted a group of people from the bedrooms of a house in Ekaterinburg in which they had been held captive and gathered them into a small room in the basement. The captives consisted of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, his wife Alexandra (granddaughter of Queen Victoria), their four daughters (Olga, Tatiana, Marie, and Anastasia), their son Alexei (a hemophiliac), the family physician (Dr. Bodkin), and two female servants. In the basement, following the orders of Vladimir Lenin telegraphed from Moscow, the soldiers opened fired with their machine guns and killed them all. Their bodies were hauled into a forest some miles outside of the town. Some were dumped into an abandoned mine pit and others were buried in a common grave. In 1979 one of the soldiers led authorities to the site of the common grave, where skeletal remains from a number of the presumed victims were found. DNA typing revealed these to be the remains of Nicholas, Alexandra, three of their daughters [thought to be Olga (age 23 at the time of death), Tatiana (age 21), and Marie (age 19), based on the degree of maturity of the skeletal remains], Dr. Bodkin (identified from DNA of living relatives), and two female servants.
