Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Template General Information Lesson Title: The Diverse Me & My Family Subject(s): Social Studies, Culture & Diversity Grade/Level/Setting: 1 st grade Instructional Setting: You are a self-contained 1 st grade general education teacher in an elementary school. Your class comprises a variety of students with different abilities and backgrounds: • 28 students total (16 boys and 12 girls) • 19 students are on-grade-level readers • 5 students are two grades above reading level (2 are identified as gifted and talented) • 2 students are English learners at the intermediate level • 2 students who are identified as having special needs The seating arrangement for the classroom is composed of pods containing homogenous/heterogenous cooperative learning groups. There are four groups four students, and four groups of three students, a total of eight groups/pods. Group One: 2 gifted/above grade level readers; 1 above grade level reader Group Two: 1 above grade level reader; 1 ELL intermediate; 1 on grade level reader Group Three: 1 above grade level reader; 1 ELL intermediate; 2 on grade level readers Group Four: 1 SPED; 2 on grade level readers Group Five: 1 SPED; 2 on grade level readers Group Six: 4 on grade level readers Group Seven: 4 on grade level readers Group Eight : 4 on grade level readers The classroom contains one large whiteboard at the front of the room, there is also a smart board attached to the whiteboard. Lesson objectives clearly written on the whiteboard in “I can” statements that students are easily able to understand. Daily instructions for the lesson are also written down. The teacher’s computer/laptop is connected to the projector to project pictures and a Kahoot during and after the lesson. The students also have their own iPads to answer the Kahoot exit ticket at the end of the
lesson. Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge: What do your students already know or what do they need to know about the selected topic to successfully participate in the lesson? Students must have prior knowledge of family structures, literary themes, brief understanding of their personal culture/heritage. Prior to this lesson the instructor will have this parent letter sent home and returned. Parent Letter Dear Parents, This week will be learning about customs and traditions that unite families and make us diverse! Please spend time with your child the next few days discussing a family tradition or custom that you and your family celebrate. Try to share something that is no t part of a city or national celebration, but is something that your family does in the ordinary course of enjoying one another. Examples may include traditions such as the first day of school ritual, family customs related to celebrating a birthday, a special religious or cultural holiday, and/or special days like “family movie night.” Include in your discussion the special food, drinks, clothing, activities, and decorations related to the celebrations of the
