2MinterBuddhism is a religion that is practiced by more than 500 million people which makes it the fourth largest global religion [ CITATION Gay20 \l 1033 ]. The Buddhist teaching spread from fifth century BCR India throughout Asia, and then more recently to Europe and the Americans. The three main branches of Buddhism are Theravada, Mahayana, and Tibetan[ CITATION Gay20 \l 1033 ]. Buddhism is such a popular religion but many people that don’t practice the religion know nothing about why they practice, what the religion consists of, and how it got so popular.The religion of Buddhism was founded in northeastern India by a man with the name of Prince Siddhartha Gautama in the fifth century. Gautama decided to give up his lavish lifestyle tolive in poverty. When living in poverty didn’t meet his expectations, he decided to pursue the idea of existing without social indulgences but also without deprivation [ CITATION His20 \l 1033 ]. Prince Siddhartha achieved enlightenment and became known as Shakyamuni; he then preached a path of salvation to his followers. Its earliest form was based off of Shakyamuni’s teaching and moral code. When Gautama died his followers began a religious movement in which Buddha’s teachings became the foundation for what would develop into Buddhism[ CITATION His20 \l 1033 ].
