Week Three Assignment There are many various parts of a neuron. A neuron is a type of brain cell, with two specialized extensions. One receives electronic signals, the other transmits them. The first part of the neuron is the cell body , or soma. This is a large oval structure that maintains the neuron. It provides fuel and produces chemicals. In the center there is a nucleus which contains genetic instructions, or DNA. The second part is the dendrites. They extend from the cell body to receive signals from neurons, muscles, or sense organs and then pass the signal to the cell body. They are responsible for the increase in brain size, because after birth they dramatically grow and make connections between neurons and other cells or organs. The dendrites have receptors on them, which are special areas that function like chemical locks. The axon is a thin structure that carries signals away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles or organs. They vary in length and can even be as long as three feet. It also conducts signals to a neighboring organ (heart), a muscle,
