Suburbs and New Life Cold War Period: Post-World War II Keywords Marshall Plan Truman Doctrine Cold War NATO Arms Race Marshall Plan WWII is over and Truman is now the president of the U.S. FDR dies in 1945 Truman had a legacy to uphold o The U.S. greatness on a global stage Development of atomic technology Diplomacy needs to happen when war is over o After mass killing and violence Secretary of StateGeorge Marshall o Comes up with Marshall Plan A diplomatic settlement between nations that support democracy Making it possible for the government to provide over 13 million dollars to foreign countries 1947-1951 this money is given to countries who want to remain democratic environments people who did not agree were considered threats to star a WW3 The US is doing what it can to support democratic environments Truman Doctrine Truman make s a speech known as the Truman Doctrine o Was based on an idea that didn’t originate with Truman...it originated with George Keenan Keenan was a foreign diplomat from the US that spent time in Soviet Russia After his time there he wrote an article that talks about the dangers of communism He believed that the soviets were a threat to the rest of the world They had “expansive tendencies” He thought soviets wanted to spread communist beliefs to the rest of the world In the late 1940s, Greece and turkey are enduring civil violence and Truman believed that these people were turning to communism to solve their countries problems In his doctrine, particularly these two countries needed to be stopped o If these two countries adopted the communist ideas, then countries around them would too and it would begin to spread
If people were going to associate themselves with communism, it needed to be contained to prevent it from spreading throughout the world Truman believed in a democratic nation Cold War Lasted from the middle of the 40s to the 80s
