Duverger’s law explains how this arises. Third Party- Parties that organize to compete against the two major American political parties. 3 Functions of Parties 1. Party in the Electorate- Simplify voting choices; Organize interest and voters into broad coalitions; Openly debate policy issues; Mobilize and engage the “average” citizen with the governing process 2.
