Barış YETKİN Freyja and Aphrodite There are many similar gods and goddesses in Greek and Norse mythology. The differences are based on cultural backgrounds. Therefore, their positions, behaviors and habits are formed for cultural reasons. In this paper i will examine the similar and different features of Frejya and Aphrodite. Both goddesses are extremely beautiful. In Greek mythology some gods believed that Aphrodite’s beauty can cause a war. They represent uncensored sexuality and lust. Their irresistible beauty seduced many gods and humans. Aphrodite loses her lover Adonis and weeps for him for days until she finds him in the underworld. Freyja's husband Odin dissappears for quite sometime and she too weeps for him, just as Aphrodite weeps for Adonis. However, Odin returns to Freyja and their marriage happily continues. Aphrodite is easily persuaded by things of beauty like gold. Freyja equally has a love for beauty. She has a particular love for flowers and gold. Aphrodite wears her golden girdle to enhance her beauty.
