Physics 203 Lab 4 – Linear Momentum
In this lab, we will observe how three variables affect the speed of an object in motion –
mass of Wally the astronaut (m
), magnitude of propulsion force from fire extinguisher (F
and duration of propulsion force from fire extinguisher (time, ∆t). two of the variables will be
held constant in three runs of the simulation; force and mass are held constant in run 1, mass and
time are held constant in run 2, and force and time are held constant in run 3. This will allow us
to observe all associations between the variables and the speed of Wally, the astronaut we are
testing for speed.
In this momentum experiment, why should you shut off the fire extinguisher before Wally
reaches the first photogate red line?
