History 200 – Lecture #3 Pocahontas (Jamestown) Colors of the Wind o Indians are not proto-ecologists o Most are mobile Savages Separatists Plymouth was the first colony in Jamestown Not pilgrims but Separatists A bunch of them leave Jamestown and go to The Netherlands Construct a deal with Virginia Company of London in summer of 1620 (Mayflower) and they hit land and drew up what they call the Mayflower Compact; established economic legs in fur, fishing, lumber, ship building Limited success of the Separatists Puritans Migration Beginning in 1630 thousands come God required that they refrain from drunkenness, adultery and so forth Where they go beyond where we are now is a set of beliefs o Doctrine of Pre-Destination God is all powerful and good; Men are evil and helpless All mankind is predestined before birth to either eternal salvation in heaven or eternal damnation in hell Elect/visible saint – those predestined to salvation; Pure Church
