Name: Joseph Youkhanna CHM2230 : Section 11 Title: Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Date: August 11, 2014 Purpose: By using a nitration reaction, we will prepare a mixture of o- and p- nitroaniline. We will also use different methods of isolation, separation, and purification with a goal of getting a melting point, and IR spectra, which are going to be used to identify the major product. Table of Reagents: Reagent Name Molecular Weight Mol used 2.7g Acetanilide 135.17g/mol .020 mol 9.0 mL concentrated H2SO4 98.04g/mol 1.7 x 10^-4 mol 1.5 mL concentrated HNO3 63.01g/mol 3.3 x 10^-5 mol 25 mL of H2O 18.02g/mol .0014 mol 25 mL Ammonium Hydroxide 35.05g/mol 6.4 x 10^-4 mol 4.0 mL Ethanol 46.08g/mol 6.8 x 10^-5 mol 2-3 Boiling stones Product Data: 1. o-nitroaniline – literature MP = 72°C Molecular Weight = 138.12g/mol 2. p-nitroaniline – Molecular Weight = 138.12g/mol 0.020 mol acetanilide X 1 mol p-nitroaniline/1 mol acetanilide = 0.020 mol p-nitroaniline X 138.12g/1 mol = 2.76g Theoretical Yield of p-nitroaniline = 2.76g. The book shows that p-nitroaniline has a melting point is 147°C.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
