Kush Dawar Lab section 13 TA: Sanofur Abdeen 9/22/2010 Experiment 3: A Stereo specific Wittig Synthesis (Preparation of trans-9-(2- Phenylethenyl)anthracene Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to convert an aldehyde into an alkene. We use a phosphorus ylide to do this process. We isolate the product, recrystalize it. We get a Trans product as the reagent used is really bulky. Table of Reagents compound Molecular weight Grams used # of moles 9-anthraldehyde 206.25 g/mol .495 grams 495 g x 1 mol = .0024 206.25 g Benzyltriphenylphosphonium chloride 392.41 g/mol .950 grams .950 g x 1 mol = .0024 392.41 g Dichloromethane 84.93 g/mol 15 mL x 1.32 g =19.8g 1 mL 19.8 g x 1 mol = .233 84.93 g sodium hydroxide 40.00 g/mol 1.25 mLx1.11 g =1.38g 1 mL 1.387 g x 1 mol = .034 40.00 g We also use water, drying agent sodium sulfate,2-propanol Product Data from Literature The product of this reaction would be trans-9-(2-Phenylethenyl)anthracene(yellow crystals), as the reactants are two bulky. The formula is C 22 H 16 and its molecular weight is 280.25 g/mol. The melting point should be between 131 O C – 133 O C.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
