In The House of the Spirits , Isabel Allende deals with the nature of a patriarchal society and the conventions and roles found therein. The reader is presented with a variety of strong female characters who manage to undermine the conventions of a prevalently male-dominated society. In a twist on the antiquated idea that a woman's role requires her to be silent, the women in The House of the Spirits often use their silence to gain power. The powerful nature of silence lies in the fact that anybody can be silent, and make use of the power derived from silence. Because of this, The House of the Spirits presents the idea that everyone – be it man or woman – can harbour some sort of authority. Through the actions of the female characters in the novel, Isabel Allende thus explores the ability of silence to subvert the gender roles circumscribed by a patriarchal society, thereby transcending the belief that only males can dominate and have control.
