Short, simple slogans like Lenin's famous cry of “peace, land and bread” undoubtedly appealed to a disillusioned peasantry tired of Tsardom and clamouring for change. One goes back to the introduction, where Robert Redfield's famous work Peasant Society and Culture was mentioned: if, as he states, the major agencies of change for a peasant community are indeed roads, participation in political process, migration, military service, schools and the church, then at this point in time the peasant society was well on their way towards a definitive change. The typical soldier could rarely find any convincing reason to stay and fight. Appeals such as the “Antiwar Appeal of Soldiers of the 437 th Chernigov Infantry Brigade” by the United Group of Social-Democrats and Socialist-Revolutionaries (Appendix B) were powerful and attractive, with their simplistic language and ideas.
