Brad Ferrell--- T.A. What Is Health? Definitions of Health: 1. Origin- angering the gods 2. Historical Definitions- if you have the symptoms, you have the issue. WHO definition; health is the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (WHO has not amended this since 1948.) Public health addresses the health needs of a society as opposed to the needs of individuals. Public Health; the science and art of promoting health, preventing disease and prolonging life through organized efforts of society. Infectious Diseases can be passed from person to person and caused by a specific agent. Chronic Diseases are characterized by degeneration of body organs--- often due to misuse and neglect influenced Morbidity; (Having the symptoms) The state of having a disease. As life span goes up, morbidity goes up. Mortality; death rate. Public Health Changes over the past century that have lengthened life span: Vaccinations, Control of infectious diseases, fluoridation of drinking water, safer workplaces, recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard. Leading causes of death in 1900 were infectious diseases. Now, they’re diseases that are
