Focus on Consent 1. Context- each person is equally free to act. 2. Actual Consent- a person gives permission. 3. Responsibility- lies with the person who initiates the sexual activity. Consent to some sexual activity is not consent to all sexual activity! Is/was a given action violent? Look first at the effects of the action- not the intention. What causes sexual violence? Sexual violence is always a choice! A perpetrator CHOOSES to be violent. A victim’s behavior cannot be the cause of an assault/incident. Victim’s choices may influence whether the environment is conducive to violence but does not cause the act. What contributes to Sexual Violence? Men are socialized to be aggressive and powerful. Taught to be tough and unemotional. Taught to do what it takes to be successful. Taught that they should always be thinking about/wanting sex and should try all possible means to get a woman to have sex. Taught to be “head of household” and financial breadwinner.
