Alcohol Objectives: To describe the health effects of the chronic abuse of alcohol. To list common impairment-related problems associated with chronic abuse of alcohol. To identify and explain the drinking continuum. To understand the immediate effects of alcohol abuse. To define impairment and list the alcohol-related and individual factors that may affect impairment levels. Continuum of Substance Use Abstinence->Experimentation->Use->Abuse->Physical Dependence->Death Binge Drinking; having 5 or more drinks in a row for men, 4 or more for women on at least one occasion in the last two weeks. A common form of alcohol abuse on college campuses. Binge drinking kills dozens of college students each year in this country. Fast, heavy drinking can easily raise BAC levels quickly, leading to unconsciousness and death. If you drink alcohol, within the last school year, have you experienced the following as a consequence of your drinking: Forgot where you were or what you did- 19% Did something you later regretted- 23% Physically injured yourself- 9% Why do some Students drink? Social Dependence Groups of friends (student organizations) depend on drinking high quantities of alcohol as part of their normal functioning. Drinking is encouraged, subtle and unsubtle ways.
