Health is a right, not a blessing. How do health and human rights interact? Human rights to: life, do with the body as one chooses, education, assembly, freedom, security, etc. Human Rights; set of beliefs about societal basis of human well-being. Series of non- provable statements about what people need to maintain their human dignity. Describes the relationship between individuals and society. The United Nations Charter--- everybody has human rights, not through discriminatory factors, but solely from being human. Note Article 55 and 56. Important Documents (International Bill of Human Rights): Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (1966), International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966). 1 st Optional Protocol to the ICCPR. Other UN Treaties: Convention of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948), Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees (1950), International Covenant on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (1965), etc. (Women, Torture, Children, Death Penalty, and *upcoming Disabilities) Individuals have the actual rights. Nation States- Ratify human rights documents, respect negative rights, protect, and
