Correlation Correlating rocks means that we establish that they came from the same time Can correlate across regions, continents, and between continents Similarity of rock types Make the assumption that similar rock types in two regions formed at the same time Fossils Body fossils include: Hard skeletal elements such as bones, teeth, and shell Soft parts (rarely preserved) Only in extraordinary circumstances is the soft parts preserved. Methods of Preservation Petrification / Permineralization Cavities and pores spaces are filled with precipitated mineral matter (usually silica) Replacement Some of the hard parts may be dissolved and at the same time replaced with minerals. This process doesn’t change the form of the shell or bone. This is said to be a molecule by molecule process. Molds Water passing through a sedimentary rock may dissolve a shell or bone completely.
