2RESEARCH IN MOTIONResearch in Motion (RIM), a global mobile communications company was founded in1984 when Lazaeidis and Fregin formed the company with the obtainment of a contract fromGeneral Motors of Canada. With the contract, the company was to perform industrial automationof General Motor’s operations. In the early stages, the company survived from contract to thenext. By the late 1980s, the company saw their annual revenue in the millions. In 1988, thecompany decided to explore new market opportunities which landed them in the wirelessoperations market and enabled RIM to become “the first wireless data technology developer inNorth America and the first company outside Scandinavia to develop connectivity products forthe Mobitex wireless packet-switched data communications network. The technology was widelyused for business communications, such as processing credit-card sales” (Cardon, 2016).Contiuning on, RIM continued to acquire various telecommunication companies to help providesolutions to wireless systems. In 1992, the company reached a major breakthrough bydiscovering a device to receive and send messages on a pager and in 1996 RIM launched theirfirst product break through known as the Interactive Pager. “Seen as innovative, the productsignified one of the first of its kind to introduce consumers to the novelty of sending andreceiving messages over a wireless network” (Cardon, 2016). This device was short lived andoutgrown by other products. However, the Interactive Pager created a strong foundation for thefuture development of RIM’s products. RIM continued to grow and in 1997 the company listeditself as a publicly traded company and raised over one hundred million dollars from investors.About a year later, RIM introduced their first BlackBerry handheld wireless computing device.By 1999, the handheld offered the ability to access basic e-mails and two-way paging on a six-line display with a small QWERTY keyboard. Along with this, consumers were able to browse

RIM continued to develop the popularproduct by releasing newer versions with increased user capabilities.By 2008, BlackBerry devices held an estimated 44.5 per cent of the U.S. smartphonemarket.
